Still, you should always be alert in a big city. I have been catching the bus from SF Opera performances for more than 40 years-since I was a teen ager girl, never had a problem. So it would be fine if you stayed close to Union Square, or at the Embarcadero, or along Van Ness Ave., or near Fisherman's Wharf (you'd just need to walk a few blocks or transfer to another bus). And, yes, as others have said, the taxis are cheap as the downtown area is compact. You won't be alone, when the opera lets out there will be others catching public transit. Or you can walk a three blocks up Van Ness to O'Farrell Street, where you can catch the 38 Geary bus that will take you to Union Square. You can also walk a couple of blocks down to Market Street to the MUNI metro station to catch the underground streetcar lines that will take you downtown to the Powell St. toward the bay there is the 5 Fulton bus on McAllister (about a half block away) that will take you to Market Street all the way to the Embarcadero, and drop you just blocks from Union Square. Public transit from the War Memorial Opera House (on Van Ness Ave.) is excellent.
